At CSI, we understand that seeking legal counsel can be an intimidating (and confusing) task. Today we’re going to break down your legal rights and the representation that is available to you as students.
At least, we’re going to try to.
Housing
Did you know that as a renter, you are protected under Ontario’s tenants right? Since most students are currently renting, it’s our goal to provide you with all the proper resources! Your tenant rights protect you from instances like wrongful evictions, rent increases, and guarantees you with easy-to-understand leases.
If you run into any disputes with your housing, your legal expenses will be covered through the legal protection program.
So, what exactly are housing disputes? These are instances that goes against your tenant rights. They include disputed rent increases, an illegal eviction, and breach of a condition within the lease.
Employment
Employees are protected under the Employment Standard Act. This includes regulations regarding minimum wage, hours of work limits, and termination of employment policies.
Any legal fees related to a dispute with a current or future contract of employment are covered under the legal protection program! However, there are a few stipulations. If you are eligible for legal representation services by a government agency, those legal fees would not be included.
Academic Institution & Public Notaries
Legal expenses in the event of a dispute with an academic institution are covered under the legal protection program. However, this excludes any cases related to sexual misconduct or a criminal act.
Commissioning services and notarizing services are also available under the legal protection program. Booking an appointment is simple and can be completed online by submitting a support form, which will be linked below!
And that’s it! We hope you were able to gain a better understanding on your legal rights and how we can support you. Still have questions? No problem! Read more about the legal protection program here:
