ATTENTION CLASS OF 2022! With graduation and the search for jobs approaching, creating your resume is the first step toward your career journey. When applying to these positions, you will need a resume that stands out to employers, summarizes your professional experiences effectively, and most importantly, helps you land your dream job!
Here are some helpful tips to get your resume ready for success:
- Use Descriptive Words
Select the experiences that best reflect your skills and abilities to problem-solve and use resume adjectives that best suit your resume. Some examples include: accountable, passionate, determined, proficient, creative, motivated, and detailed. Using descriptive words can help emphasize your qualifications and make a lasting impression on your employer.
- Be Consistent
For every work experience position, your resume should include the title of the position, the place of employment, location and date/year range. The layout should remain consistent as well as your font choice. For example, if one header is bolded, bold all headings.
- Include a Variety of Experiences
Employers are interested in more than just paid employment. Relevant leadership roles, student organizations, volunteering, internships, and part-time jobs are all excellent ways to demonstrate your skills and personality.
- Keep it 1 to 2 Pages
Employers spend six seconds on average per resume (at first glance!). Scan your resume and ensure that everything on the page is relevant to the position you’re applying for. Employers should be able to see a clear link between your experience and the open position.
- Maintain Visual Balance
Strong resumes have a balance of black and white space. Avoid having too much text or too much space. Choose a readable font and use a font size larger than 10 points.
