Overview

May 5th is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2 Spirit Individuals. Artist Jaime Black’s started the REDress Project, which highlights the epidemic of violence against Indigenous women in Canada. The legacy of colonialism, ongoing racism experienced by Indigenous Peoples, compounded by gender based discrimination, results in Indigenous women and girls in Canada being 12 times more likely to be murdered or go missing than any other women in Canada, and 16 times more likely than Caucasian women (Peter, 2016). Indigenous women are sacred, they are our sisters, mothers, wives, friends, teachers, and students. Today we honor, uphold, and advocate alongside them by creating a living legacy through commemoration and artistic expressions.
